Dunham Cellars – love this place. Two years straight, we’ve visited Walla Walla and there is much to see and taste there. The Bordeaux blends are big and juicy and the Rhone varietals are among the best in the US. Dunham has been around for years and really has the Cab, Merlot, and Rieslings down pat.
On this visit, we were treated to a tour of the whole place, including Eric Dunham’s private cellar. Check out the pic of the first vintages of the now famous numbered Cabs—->
Tasting menu of the day included the new big point Lewis Vineyard Riesling (one of my favs), the 2008 Lewis Vineyard Merlot (very nice), and the XVII Cab. We got the chance to buy bottles from the library as well. Taking advantage, we bought a 2004 and 2005 Lewis Vineyard Cab at release price! We also bought the VII Cab, a rare treat. At home, we opened the Cab and found it drinking well. I wouldn’t hold these any longer, drink up!
The Lewis Vineyard 2004 was a stunner. This is one of the best cabs I’ve had from Walla Walla thus far. No signs of fading at this point, this is a big boy with a velvety jacket. Each sip brought changes in the palette. Tannins are soft and fruit is big, red, and juicy. Open it if you have it. A little decant and just enjoy the ride.
Dunham VII Cab – $55 – 89 points. Probably slightly past peak, but still a good one.
Dunham Lewis Vineyard Cab 2004 $75 – 94 points!!! In my top three cabs from Walla Walla. I can’t wait to try the 2005, which will be coming soon.
Make sure to visit Dunham while in Walla Walla.
